| Playing Jesus Music: The Way It Use To Be. | Mar 14, 2007 |
In its infancy, Jesus music was simple and melodic. It had meaning, and like Elisha and his minstrel, could inspire one to prophesy. Those who were part of this movement wrote from the innermost parts. Many didn't know much theology, like the music they were Christians in their infancy, but out of the mouth of babes the Lord had perfected praise. Not that there isn't any good Christian music being written today. One has to applaud the efforts of groups such as MercyMe, Caedmon's Call, and Third Day, but content is sorely lacking in much of the music today and conviction isn't the norm. Much of the music appeals to the base emotions of the listener rather then to the heart of the matter. Music should reveal who you are in light of who God is. As Steve Camp said, much of todays music has a "syrupy, God-as-my-girlfriend" appeal to it. The norm is to throw a couple of "Hallelujahs" and "Praise Him" in and voila! you have yourself a Christian song. But Christian music should exalt the name of the Almighty with a lyrical content borne out of inspiration and not out of emotion. That is the reason why I started this blog, in the hopes is that you enjoy this classic CCM as much as we do. Check often, considering I will add more songs as time permits.
